In 1933 the all-white Southern Association graded Wiley excellent — and told it not to consider itself one of them. Membership took another twenty-seven years.
They sued to stop a Black university from being pushed out of New Orleans. They lost. Then they went and found somebody who could buy the building.
Ninety percent of Black-owned farmland is gone. The mechanism has a name almost nobody knows.
