The MEAC/SWAC Challenge outdrew most of the opening weekend. It was played at Center Parc, and it came down to a throw with 2:41 left.
On the night of August 29, at Center Parc Stadium on Georgia State's campus, Howard beat Alabama A&M 31–24 in the 20th annual Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off.
The broadcast averaged 1.2 million viewers on ABC and peaked at 1.7 million, according to Nielsen Big Data + Panel measurement. The average audience was up ten percent year over year, making it the second most-watched edition of the game on record and one of the most-watched college football broadcasts of the entire opening weekend.
That game was played here.
Howard led 13–0 and looked like it would stay comfortable. Alabama A&M did not record a first down in the opening quarter; Howard outgained the Bulldogs 145 yards to 25 in that period, 113 to 12 through the air, and held the ball more than ten minutes.
Then the game turned into a different game.
Alabama A&M answered with a four-play, 69-yard drive, quarterback Cornelius Brown IV escaping pressure on third-and-10 and throwing down the left sideline to Jarel Williams for a 26-yard touchdown. Officials ruled it incomplete on the field and reversed the call after review.
The Bulldogs kept coming. From a 20–7 deficit they took a 24–23 lead in the fourth quarter, and their band and their sideline had every reason to believe the night was theirs.
With 2:41 remaining, Howard quarterback Ja'Shawn Scroggins threw 51 yards to Se'Quan Osborne for the go-ahead touchdown. Alabama A&M's final possession ended in a fumble that Howard recovered.
Scroggins finished with 315 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Conord kicked field goals of 18, 19 and 24 yards. Markus Hopson caught a one-yard touchdown on the opening drive. On the other side, Kylon Roberts sacked Scroggins and forced a fumble recovered by Arenza Davis, and Rodney Roane Jr. intercepted Brown at the Howard 28 and returned it 20 yards.
Howard's win moved the MEAC to 13–7 all-time in the Challenge. The conference went 5–1 across the opening weekend, with all six programs playing.
South Carolina State's 87 points against Savannah State is the number that stops a reader, and Savannah State is a Georgia school. That result deserves its own reporting rather than a line in a list.
North Carolina Central's freshman quarterback Nelson Layne made his college debut in the loss to Texas Southern, rushing for 116 yards and two touchdowns and adding 131 through the air.
Scores are settled the night they happen. Audience figures are the argument that keeps games on television.
The 2026 Challenge was ESPN's second most-watched on record and it grew year over year in a Week 0 that was unusually crowded, because the college season started later and more games were packed into the window. It held its own in a competitive slate rather than in an empty one.
That is the number that gets cited the next time somebody decides whether this game belongs on a broadcast network. It is also the number that rarely gets written down anywhere a reader can find it later.
[TO CONFIRM] — Howard's head coach. Two outlets report the win as the first for head coach Ted White. A third names Larry Scott. These cannot both be right. Confirm against Howard Athletics before this runs, and correct in the open if it has already run wrong anywhere.
[TO CONFIRM] — spelling. Alabama A&M's quarterback appears as both Cornelius and Cornelious Brown IV in the coverage. Use the SWAC roster spelling.
